How to Fill Out a PDF on Android Without Installing an App
You can fill out a PDF on an Android phone without installing a new app. For a fillable PDF, open it in Google Drive and tap Fill out form, or open it in your browser. For a flat PDF with no fields, such as a scan or a landlord form, use a browser-based editor and type straight onto the page. Below are the steps for each route and what to do when a form will not save.
Fillable vs Flat PDFs
The method depends on what kind of PDF you have, so check first.
- Fillable PDF: has real form fields. Tap a blank and the keyboard appears. Many IRS, USCIS and HR forms are built this way.
- Flat PDF: a scan, photo or plain export. Tapping does nothing because the blanks are just printed lines.
A quick test: open the file in Google Drive. If a Fill out form button shows up, the PDF is fillable. If it does not, treat the file as flat. Several vendor guides, including Adobe's and Jotform's Android walkthroughs (checked October 2026), describe the same check. Our guide on how to fill out a PDF that is not fillable covers the flat case in more depth.
Using Google Drive
Drive is already on most Android phones, and it is the simplest option for a short, fillable form.
- Save the PDF to your phone, or upload it to Drive. From Gmail, tap the attachment and choose the Drive icon to save it.
- Open the Google Drive app and tap the PDF.
- Tap Fill out form and type into each field.
- Tap Save when you are done.
This works for plain text fields. Long forms, scanned forms and anything with dropdowns or special formatting are harder, and Drive offers no way to add text to a flat PDF. Adobe, which sells a competing reader, says on its own help pages that its app handles more complex forms. That is a commercial view, but it matches what many people hit in practice once a form goes past a page or two.
Filling a PDF in Your Browser
A browser editor is a good fit when the form is flat, long, or needs a signature. You do not install anything, and it works the same in Chrome, Samsung Internet or Firefox on Android.
- Open PDF Editify's fill PDF tool in your browser.
- Tap to upload and pick the PDF from your phone storage or Drive.
- Tap a blank, add a text box, and type. Pinch to zoom in so the box lands exactly on the line.
- Add checkmarks, dates and any other entries. Move or resize items by dragging.
- Download the finished PDF. It lands in your Downloads folder and can be attached to an email or message.
Two tips for a small screen. Zoom in before placing each box, because it is much easier to line up text at 200 percent. And turn your phone sideways for wide forms, which gives you a larger work area.
Signing and Saving
Many forms need a signature as the last step. In the browser, use the sign PDF tool to draw your signature with a finger, type it, or upload an image of it. Place it on the signature line and resize it so it does not cover printed text. If you plan to send the form to a landlord, employer or agency, ask whether a typed or drawn electronic signature is accepted. For most everyday paperwork it is. Our post on the ESIGN Act and electronic signatures explains the basics, though it is not legal advice.
Before you send the file, open the downloaded copy and scroll through every page. Check that every entry is visible and that nothing shifted when you saved. Rename the file so you can find it later, for example lease-application-signed.pdf.
When a Form Will Not Save
These are the most common problems on Android and how to fix them.
- Typed text disappears after saving. Some viewers show your entries but do not write them into the file. Open the saved copy in a different viewer to check. If the text is missing, fill the form again in a browser editor and download a fresh copy.
- The Fill out form button is missing. The PDF is probably flat. Use a text-box editor instead.
- The form says it needs a newer reader or shows blank pages. Some government and corporate forms use XFA, an older dynamic form type. One vendor's Android documentation notes that dynamic XFA forms are not supported in its app. Open the form on a desktop browser or ask the sender for a standard PDF version.
- The file is locked or password protected. If you have the right to edit it, remove the restriction first with the unlock PDF tool.
- The file is too large for email. Photo-heavy scans can be big. Upload to Drive and share a link instead.
A Quick Example: A Rental Application
Say a landlord texts you a scanned rental application and wants it back today. Here is a realistic flow on a phone, start to finish.
- Save the scan from your messages to Downloads. Tap the file in Drive. No Fill out form button appears, so the file is flat.
- Open the fill PDF tool in Chrome and upload the file.
- Zoom in on the first section. Add a text box for your full name, current address and phone number. Each box takes a few seconds once you have zoomed in.
- Scroll to the employment and income sections. Add boxes for employer, job title and monthly income, then add a checkmark for each yes or no question.
- On the last page, add your signature and today's date.
- Download the PDF, scroll through all pages once, and reply to the landlord with the file attached.
A form like this usually takes 10 to 15 minutes on a phone the first time. If you have a laptop nearby, a desktop browser is faster for long forms, but nothing in the process requires one.
Keeping Your Documents Private
Forms often include a Social Security number, a bank account or a home address, so check how a tool handles uploads before you use it. Look for a stated deletion policy and avoid free tools that do not explain what happens to your file. PDF Editify deletes files after processing. Also avoid filling sensitive forms on public Wi-Fi, and delete the finished copy from shared folders or messaging threads once the recipient has it.
What It Costs
Built-in options like Drive cost nothing, and they are fine for simple fillable forms. Browser editors for flat PDFs usually charge to export. PDF Editify lets you try the editor without a card, and exporting needs a plan. If you only have one form to finish, the One Week Plan is $3 one-time. It expires on its own, so there is nothing to cancel. A monthly subscription from other tools often costs several times that, plus the risk of forgetting to cancel. If you fill forms all year, the Standard plan is $10 a month or $100 a year, and Lifetime starts at $99 one-time. See pricing for the full list.
Which Method Should You Pick?
Use Google Drive when the form is fillable, short, and you do not need to sign. Use a browser editor when the form is flat, long, scanned, or needs a signature and dates. For anything you will submit to an employer, school or agency, a browser editor gives you the most control over the finished file, and you never have to install an app you will use once. If you have the same form on an iPhone, see our iPhone version of this guide.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I fill out a PDF on Android without an app?
Yes. Google Drive is already on most Android phones and handles simple fillable forms. For flat or scanned PDFs, open a browser-based editor in Chrome, upload the file, type onto the page, and download the result.
Why can't I type into my PDF on my Android phone?
The PDF is probably flat, meaning it has no real form fields. Use an editor that lets you add text boxes anywhere on the page instead of relying on fillable fields.
How do I sign a PDF on Android?
Use an editor with a signature tool. Draw your signature with a finger, type it, or upload an image, then place it on the signature line and download the signed copy.
Can I fill out a PDF on Android for free?
For simple fillable forms, yes, through Google Drive or a free reader. Browser editors for flat PDFs often require a paid plan to export. PDF Editify's One Week Plan is $3 one-time.
Why does my filled PDF look blank after saving?
Some viewers display entries without writing them into the file. Open the saved copy in another viewer to check, and if the text is missing, refill the form in a browser editor and download a fresh copy.
